A tale of murder and suspense +
Centered around main character Detective Julie Bradford, Spring Fever weaves a tale of murder and suspense throughout it's 400+ pages. It also manages to weave in some supernatural flair, an oddly paced love story, dream sequences, extreme family drama, misogyny, an actual fight scene, the suicide of a particularly interesting character, amnesia, a car accident and subsequent shooting, and...I think that's it.
Garnet's writing style, in and of itself, flowed well and kept me going, but it almost seemed like they threw in every single literary device that could possibly fit into one novel and still stay intact. A few times towards the final third of the book I found myself trying to guess what other random storyline would come up, and I was right in several instances. I wish that Garnet had kept things more streamlined and focused, as opposed to shooting off in so many directions.
Main character Julie was likeable enough, and portrayed in a mostly strong and intelligent manner- which I enjoyed. In fact, after breaking the big case that she was investigating, several of her male bosses refused to examine her theory and supporting evidence, to which they subsequently made egregious errors in handling their next steps. There are several other supporting characters that I had a hard time believing in such as her significant other, David. As a result, I occasionally found myself skimming their scenes and having to go back and reread them. Again I feel that Garnet could have removed some of the extraneous plot devices and possibly focused on more supporting character development.
3 out of 5 Stars
Overall, Spring Fever is by no means a "bad" book. There were definitely some exciting twists and a very interesting perpetrator, so it is certainly worth reading. For me though, it isn't something that I was able to get absorbed in and found myself distracted by everything that it had going on.
